Rose McGowan is white hot at the lighting of the Burberry sign across the Manhattan skyline at The New York Palace Hotel on Thursday (May 28). At the event, the 35-year-old actress told me she’s starring in the new adaptation of Sylvia Plath ’s The Bell Jar . “My character’s name is Doreen,” Rose told JustJared.com . “She’s kind of a 50’s magazine girl from New York, it’s really fun. We’re shooting in South Africa most likely. I’ve never been there, so I’m really excited.” Rose also told me all about her low-key Memorial Day weekend: “Believe it or not, I slept all day long on my couch in my [body-length blanket] Snuggie . Now, I bought the Snuggie as a joke, but that thing is serious business. It will take you down! I watched 20 episodes of Golden Girls ! But I was very, very sad [when Bea Arthur died ]. Although Rose and Blanche are my favorite, Bea was the glue.” And if you’re wondering why Rose isn’t wearing earrings in some of the pictures, here’s the explanation of her mini fashion disaster. “I immediately got a blob of pink lipstick on my lovely satin lapel,” Rose shared. “So yes, now my earrings serve as a brooch. Let’s not tell Burberry!”

As we first mentioned back in 2007, film director Robert Rodriguez has been trying to remake the Jane Fonda classic, Barbarella . The down side? He decided to cast his girlfriend, Rose McGowan , as the lead. Big mistake! Months later reports surfaced that Universal Studios backed out of the deal as a result of McGowan starring in the flick, though Rodriguez denied that was the real reason, blaming it solely on financial issues. And when rumors of the couple splitting up leaked, reports were that McGowan would no longer be the lead. But, now MTV is confirming that the Barbarella remake is officially over. During a recent chat with Rodriguez, the director confirmed the movie is no longer a go. Rodriguez admitted : “It came to the point where [a company from] Germany offered us a $70 million budget, which would have been by far the biggest budget I ever would have had for a movie. But I had to shoot it in Germany and post it in Germany. Nothing against Germany, but I have five kids and I was like, ‘God, I don’t know if we can do that. I don’t know if I can be away that long.’ It was a real bummer. We had all this artwork and screen tests of what it would look like. It was a really cool, R-rated, sexy—almost like that [1981 animated] movie, ‘Heavy Metal’—version of a ‘Star Wars’ movie. Something that no one ever could get to see. It was gonna be really great.” Yea yea, we bet. Blame it on Rose!

In the vast void of remakes and sequels, there was one I was actually happy about — Robert Rodriguez’s take on Barbarella . Rose McGowan was the absolute perfect choice ( read why here ), and I knew the Double R could make something fun from it. But then his plans needed a huge budget, and scared Universal into their bank vault to protect the monies. Hope might have lingered, but now there’s no reason to hold on. In a conversation with MTV , Rodriguez said that while a German company offered to fork over $70 mil so he could make the film, he wasn’t keen on having to spend all that time overseas. Naturally — how would he see his kids or make his late-night Latin meals? So he said no, and now the project is dead and he’s moved on. The most we can hope to get is a potential release of the artwork that shows plans, and how cool it would’ve been. Tease. I have a wild idea: Make a faux trailer and at least give us something. Hell, it could be tacked onto Machete ! On a small scale, Rodriguez could show us at least some of his vision. We could see Rose fight the Orgasmatron! I’m thinking a short film trailer, like the tantalizing Trailer for a Remake of Gore Vidal’s Caligula . Who’s with me?
