Learning Is Fun: Mommy, What’s A Petabyte?

Learning Is Fun: Mommy, What’s A Petabyte?

Despite what you may have learned in school, a petabyte isn’t a byte that lures children into its van with free candy. That’s a peda byte. No, a peta byte is 1,000 gigabytes, and this is a graphic depicting how large that is (you have to hit the jump to see the rest cause it’s really long like monkey arms). And, since I’m in a teaching mood this morning, do you know what comes after petabyte? Exabyte (1 billion gigabytes), zettabyte (1 billion terabytes) and yottabyte (1 quadrillion gigabytes). A quadrillion gigabytes? That’s a lot of files porn. I can’t even wrap my head around that. But I can wrap my head around corners to peek and make sure the coast is clear. Just sayin’, I’m stealthy! Hit the jump to see the rest.

Om Nom!: Scientists Develop Lab-Grown Pork

Om Nom!: Scientists Develop Lab-Grown Pork

PORK CHOP SANDWICHES! Test tube pork . Like babies, it’s the way of the future (which, true story — I was the first test-tube baby IN SPACE). And apparently scientists in the Netherlands are close to clenching PETA’s $1 million prize for lab-grown meat . The research team, funded by a major sausage maker and the Dutch government, used cells from a live pig to grow pork muscle tissue in a Petri dish. After extracting cells called myoblasts from the muscle of a live pig, the scientists then incubated the myoblasts in a nutrient solution, which allowed the cells to multiply and create muscle. “We need to find ways of improving it by training it and stretching it, but we will get there,” Post told reporters. “This product will be good for the environment and will reduce animal suffering. If it feels and tastes like meat, people will buy it.” .nd even the scientists had to admit to reporters that they don’t know if their creation is flavorsome, because laboratory regulations forbid them from tasting anything they create. What do you mean laboratory regulations forbid you from tasting anything? That’s BUUUUULLSHIT. You made it, you deserve to eat it. Same goes for macaroni necklaces. Scientists Create Lab-Grown Pork; Bacon Industry Unmoved [sphere] Thanks to Nathan, who has his own brand of tube sausage if you’re interested.

Michelle Obama Swears Off Fur

Michelle Obama Swears Off Fur

Michelle Obama has sworn off fur! One day after French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy told PETA that she no longer wears real fur, Obama made her own animal-friendly announcement, the Washington Times reports. “Mrs. Obama does not wear fur,” her deputy press secretary, Semonti Mustaphi, said Thursday. See photos of Michelle Obama’s European style! Obama and Bruni-Sarkozy — who have met twice in recent months — are both widely known as two of the most fashionable political wives. PETA has pushed Bruni-Sarkozy — who was photographed wearing what appeared to be fur — in particular to donate her coats to the homeless. See photos of the Obama’s first 100 days in Washington. “I do not wear, buy or own fur or animal skin other than leather or skin of animals raised for feeding purposes,” she said in a letter to PETA. “I am not a vegetarian, and I don’t find it illogical to wear skins of animals whose meat is also eaten. I would gladly consider giving away sable, fox and other fur coats — if I owned any.” Unlike Bruni-Sarkozy, Obama wasn’t targeted by PETA. “We’ve never written to Michelle Obama about this issue because we have always known her to be fur-free,” Amanda Schinke, media campaigns coordinator for PETA, said. See photos the Obama’s pet dog, Bo! Still, less than a week after a sightseeing trip to France with her family, Obama followed suit with the former French supermodel. “For Michelle Obama, respecting animals is obviously part of the social progress that she and her husband are working so hard to promote,” PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews said. “By officially rejecting fur, these two style icons will make people everywhere see fur for what it is: old-fashioned and cruel.”
